It's impossible to design a good website without being able to look at the finished product. sure there are people so talented they can code an entire site without viewing it, but honestly, you need some WYSIWYG in order to get the full visual picture, and even if we're not all artists, a picture is worth a thousand lines of code.
Unless I have an extra monitor to view my progress, I always find that it's easier to print out a copy of a front page to use as an eyeball. But when you're working on so many pages, printing them all out doesn't seem like a viable method, especially when you consider that inkjet printers don't print forever, and sooner or later (usually sooner), you have to replace the ink cartridges.
Printer ink used to be expensive. It still is, if you're buying from the big boys, but if you refill them yourself (messy) or if you buy from a discount ink supplier, you're going to save a lot of money. While I try not to print anything and everything, because paper still costs money, and I'm constantly making tweaks and changes, I find that using a cheaper third-party ink cartridge allows me a little more freedom to print, without always thinking about cost per sheet. Unfortunately, regardless of the quality of the printer, it doesn't make me a better designer. |
